The Little Stray Cat

Mimi was a small brown cat with white patches on her face and paws.

She lived on the streets of a busy town with no home and no family.

Every day, she walked around looking for food in trash cans and behind restaurants.

The little cat was very thin and always hungry.

When it rained, she had to find places to hide under cars or in small spaces between buildings.

Sometimes people shouted at her to go away.

This made Mimi very sad and afraid of humans.

One morning, Mimi was looking for food near a school when she saw a young girl with long brown hair.

The girl was about ten years old and carried a pink backpack.

She stopped walking when she saw the little cat.

"Oh, you poor little thing," the girl said softly.

"You look so hungry and cold."

Mimi was scared.

She had learned that humans could be dangerous.

She quickly ran away and hid behind a tree.

But the girl did not chase her or shout.

Instead, she opened her lunch box and put some pieces of bread on the ground.

"I will leave this here for you," the girl said in a gentle voice.

"My name is Sarah. I hope you will eat it."

After Sarah went to school, Mimi came back to the tree.

The bread smelled very good, but she was still afraid.

She looked around carefully and then quickly ate the bread.

It was the best food she had eaten in many days.

The next morning, Sarah came back to the same place.

Again, she put food on the ground for Mimi.

This time she brought some fish from her dinner the night before.

Mimi watched from behind the tree as Sarah spoke to her.

"Good morning, little cat. I brought you some fish today.

I asked my mother if we could help you, and she said yes.

We want to take care of you."

Mimi wanted the fish very much, but she was still too scared to come close while Sarah was there.

She waited until Sarah left for school, then came out to eat the fish.

It was delicious.

This happened every day for two weeks.

Sarah would bring food and talk to Mimi, but Mimi would only come out after Sarah left.

During this time, Mimi began to feel less afraid.

She started to trust that Sarah would not hurt her.

One rainy day, Mimi was very cold and wet.

She was shivering under a car when Sarah found her.

Sarah had an umbrella and wore a yellow raincoat.

"Oh no, you are so wet and cold," Sarah said.

"Please, let me help you."

Sarah carefully picked up a towel from her backpack and slowly reached toward Mimi.

For the first time, Mimi did not run away.

She was too cold and tired to move.

Sarah gently wrapped the towel around her and held her close.

"There, there, little one. You are safe now," Sarah whispered.

Mimi felt the warmth of the towel and Sarah's gentle hands.

She began to purr for the first time in many months.

Sarah smiled when she heard the soft purring sound.

"I think you like me now," Sarah said happily.

"Would you like to come home with me? My family has been waiting to meet you."

Sarah carried Mimi to her house, which was not far from the school.

It was a small house with a red door and flowers in the garden.

Sarah's mother was waiting at the door with a worried expression.

"Oh, Sarah, is this the little cat you told me about?" her mother asked.

"She looks very thin and sick. We should take her to the animal doctor."

Sarah's father came out of the house too.

He looked at Mimi with kind eyes and smiled.

"She is very small. We will need to take good care of her."

"Can we keep her, please?" Sarah asked her parents.

"I promise I will take care of her every day. I will feed her and clean her bed and play with her."

Sarah's parents looked at each other and nodded.

"Yes, we can keep her," her mother said.

"But first, we must take her to the doctor to make sure she is healthy."

The next day, Sarah and her parents took Mimi to the animal hospital.

The doctor was a nice woman who spoke softly and moved slowly so Mimi would not be afraid.

"This little cat is hungry and needs medicine, but she will be fine," the doctor said.

"She is very lucky to have found such a caring family."

The doctor gave Mimi some medicine and told Sarah's family how to take care of her.

They bought cat food, a soft bed, toys, and a collar with a small bell.

When they came home, Sarah showed Mimi around the house.

There was a comfortable living room with soft chairs, a kitchen that smelled like good food, and Sarah's bedroom with books and toys.

"This is your new home, Mimi," Sarah said.

"That is your name now. Do you like it?"

Mimi explored every corner of the house.

Everything was clean and warm and safe.

She had never been in a house before, and everything was new and interesting.

Sarah's mother prepared a bowl of special cat food and put it in the kitchen.

"This is your food bowl, Mimi," she said.

"And here is your water bowl. You will never be hungry again."

Mimi ate until she was completely full for the first time in her life.

Then she curled up in her new soft bed and fell asleep.

She felt warm and safe and loved.

In the following weeks, Mimi grew stronger and healthier.

Her brown and white fur became shiny and soft.

She gained weight and became more playful.

Every morning, she would wake up in her comfortable bed and remember that she was no longer alone.

Sarah kept her promise to take good care of Mimi.

She fed her every morning and evening, cleaned her bed, and played with her after school.

Mimi's favorite game was chasing a small ball with a bell inside.

She also loved to sit by the window and watch birds in the garden.

Sarah's parents grew to love Mimi too.

Her father would scratch behind her ears while watching television, and her mother would let Mimi sit in the kitchen while she cooked dinner.

The whole family enjoyed hearing Mimi's happy purring.

One evening, three months after Mimi came to live with Sarah's family, they were all sitting together in the living room.

Sarah was doing her homework, her parents were reading, and Mimi was sleeping in Sarah's lap.

"Look how happy she is," Sarah's mother said softly.

"It is hard to believe she was once a scared little street cat."

"She has changed so much," Sarah's father agreed.

"And she has made our family happier too."

Sarah gently petted Mimi's soft fur.

"I am so glad I found you that morning," she whispered to the sleeping cat.

"You are the best friend I could ever have."

Mimi opened her eyes and looked up at Sarah.

She began to purr and pushed her head against Sarah's hand.

She was telling Sarah, in her own way, that she was grateful and happy.

From that day on, Mimi never wanted to go outside alone again.

She had everything she needed in her new home: a warm bed, good food, people who loved her, and most importantly, a family who would never leave her.

Sometimes, when Sarah walked to school, Mimi would sit by the window and watch her go.

But Mimi was never worried because she knew Sarah would always come back home to her.

The little stray cat had found the most precious thing in the world: a loving family and a place where she truly belonged.
