My Pet Is the Dragon King

Kenji was thirteen years old and lived in a small town near the mountains.

He loved animals more than anything else in the world, but his parents would not let him have a pet.

"Pets are too much work," his mother always said.

"You are too young to take care of an animal."

One rainy afternoon, Kenji was walking home from school when he heard a small crying sound coming from behind a tree.

He looked around the tree and found a tiny lizard, no bigger than his thumb.

The little creature was wet and shivering in the cold rain.

"Poor little thing," Kenji whispered.

He gently picked up the lizard and put it inside his school bag.

"Don't worry. I will take care of you."

At home, Kenji secretly made a small home for the lizard in a shoebox.

He put soft tissues inside and found a small dish for water.

The lizard had beautiful green and gold scales that shimmered like jewels.

Its eyes were bright blue, which was very unusual for a lizard.

"I will call you Ryu," Kenji said, remembering that Ryu meant dragon in Japanese.

The little lizard seemed to like the name.

It looked at Kenji and made a soft chirping sound.

For the next few weeks, Kenji took care of Ryu in secret.

He fed the lizard small insects and drops of water.

Every day after school, he would spend time talking to Ryu and watching the little creature explore its box home.

Something strange began to happen.

Ryu was growing much faster than a normal lizard should grow.

Within a month, Ryu had grown from the size of a thumb to the size of Kenji's hand.

The lizard's scales had become brighter, and sometimes they seemed to glow softly in the dark.

Even more surprising was Ryu's behavior.

The lizard seemed to understand everything Kenji said.

When Kenji was sad about a bad test score, Ryu would climb onto his shoulder and gently touch his cheek with its tiny paw.

When Kenji was happy, Ryu would make cheerful chirping sounds.

One evening, Kenji was doing his homework when he heard his mother calling from the kitchen.

"Kenji, what is that smell? It smells like something is burning!"

Kenji ran to the kitchen and found his mother looking confused.

There was no fire anywhere, but there was definitely a smell of smoke in the air.

Kenji knew immediately where the smell was coming from - his room, where Ryu was hidden.

He quickly ran back to his room and found Ryu sitting in the middle of the shoebox.

Small puffs of smoke were coming from the lizard's nose.

Ryu looked embarrassed and made apologetic chirping sounds.

"Ryu, can you breathe fire?" Kenji asked in amazement.

The lizard nodded its small head.

"This is incredible! But you must be more careful. We cannot let my parents find out about you."

As the weeks passed, more strange things began to happen.

Ryu continued to grow larger and larger.

The lizard was now too big for the shoebox, so Kenji had to hide Ryu in his closet.

The creature's scales had become even more beautiful, shining like precious metals.

Ryu could now breathe small flames, fly short distances around Kenji's room, and seemed to understand human language perfectly.

The lizard - or whatever Ryu really was - had also become very protective of Kenji.

When bullies at school pushed Kenji, he would come home with strange burn marks on their backpacks, though Kenji never told Ryu about the bullying.

One Saturday morning, Kenji woke up to the sound of loud thunder.

But when he looked outside, the sky was clear and blue.

The thunder sound was coming from his room.

He opened his closet door and gasped.

Ryu had grown overnight into the size of a large dog.

The beautiful creature no longer looked like a lizard.

It had small wings, a long elegant neck, and definitely looked like a baby dragon.

Ryu was making deep rumbling sounds - that was what sounded like thunder.

"Ryu, what is happening to you?" Kenji asked.

The young dragon looked at him with sad, intelligent eyes.

For the first time, Ryu spoke.

"Kenji," Ryu said in a voice like wind chimes, "I am not what you think I am."

"I am sorry I could not tell you before. I am learning to speak your language, but it is difficult."

Kenji sat down hard on his bed.

His pet lizard was talking to him.

"What are you, Ryu?"

"I am Prince Ryuuji of the Dragon Kingdom," Ryu said proudly, but also sadly.

"I was lost when I was very small. A storm brought me to your world. I have been waiting for my family to find me."

Before Kenji could ask more questions, the air in his room began to shimmer like water.

A bright portal opened in the middle of his bedroom, and two enormous dragons stepped through.

One was silver with wise golden eyes, and the other was pearl white with kind blue eyes.

"My son!" the silver dragon said in a voice like rolling thunder.

"We have searched everywhere for you!"

The white dragon looked at Kenji with curious eyes.

"And who is this young human who has cared for our child?"

Ryu quickly flew to his parents but then turned back to Kenji.

"Mother, Father, this is Kenji. He saved my life and has been my best friend. He fed me and kept me safe when I was small and helpless."

The dragon king - for the silver dragon wore a crown of starlight - bowed his great head to Kenji.

"Young human, we are forever in your debt. You have shown kindness to our son when he needed it most. How can we repay you?"

Kenji felt very small next to the huge dragons, but he found his courage.

"Please, Your Majesty, I don't want anything. I just want to know that Ryu will be happy. But I will miss him very much. He is my best friend."

The dragon queen looked at her husband.

"Daichi, look at how much our son loves this human boy. And see how the boy loves our son. Perhaps there is a way for them to remain friends."

"What do you mean, Mother?" Ryu asked hopefully.

"You must come with us now, my son," the Dragon King said.

"You have duties in our kingdom. You are to become the next Dragon King, and you must learn our ways."

"But..." he paused and looked at Kenji again.

"Perhaps your human friend could visit our kingdom. If he is brave enough."

Kenji's heart jumped.

"Visit the Dragon Kingdom? Could I really?"

"It would be dangerous," the Dragon Queen warned.

"Our world is very different from yours. There are many challenges that humans cannot usually survive."

"But you have shown great kindness and courage. With our son to protect you, and our magic to help you, you might be able to visit us."

Ryu's eyes shone with hope.

"Kenji, would you come with us? Just for a visit? I promise I will bring you home safely."

Kenji thought about his parents, who would be worried if he disappeared.

But looking at Ryu's hopeful face, he knew he could not say no to his best friend.

"Yes," he said. "I will come with you."

The Dragon King touched Kenji with one enormous claw, and suddenly Kenji felt different.

His skin began to shimmer with a faint silver light, and he felt much stronger than before.

"I have given you dragon protection magic," the king explained.

"It will help you survive in our world. But it will only last for three days. After that, you must return home."

Together, the dragons and Kenji stepped through the portal.

Kenji felt like he was falling through clouds and starlight.

When the spinning stopped, he found himself in the most beautiful place he had ever seen.

The Dragon Kingdom was built on floating islands high in the sky.

Crystal bridges connected the islands, and waterfalls flowed upward instead of down.

The air smelled like flowers and rain, and everything seemed to glow with soft, magical light.

"Welcome to our home," Ryu said, now speaking perfectly clearly.

"I want to show you everything!"

For the next three days, Kenji had the most amazing adventure of his life.

Ryu took him flying on his back over the floating islands.

They visited the Crystal Library, where all dragon knowledge was kept in glowing stones.

They played games with young dragons who had never seen a human before and were fascinated by Kenji.

But not everything was wonderful.

Some of the older dragons did not like having a human in their kingdom.

They whispered that humans were dangerous and could not be trusted.

"Humans have always been our enemies," said an old red dragon named Akira.

"They destroy nature and hunt magical creatures. This boy will betray us."

Kenji felt hurt by these words, but he tried to prove that humans could be good.

When he saw dragon children who were sad because they had lost their favorite toy in a deep canyon, Kenji volunteered to climb down and get it, even though it was dangerous.

When an old dragon was sick and needed a special flower that only grew in human world, Kenji promised to bring it back.

"See?" Ryu told the other dragons. "Kenji is brave and kind. Not all humans are bad."

On the second day, a terrible thing happened.

The kingdom's greatest treasure, the Heart of Sky - a magical gem that controlled the weather - was stolen by dark spirits.

Without it, dangerous storms began to threaten all the floating islands.

"We must get the Heart back," the Dragon King announced.

"But the dark spirits live in the Shadow Valley, where dragon magic does not work well."

"I will go," Ryu said bravely.

"It is my duty as the future king."

"And I will go with him," Kenji added.

"Maybe human skills can help where dragon magic cannot."

The Dragon King looked worried.

"It is too dangerous for both of you."

"Father," Ryu said seriously, "Kenji has already shown that humans and dragons can work together. Please let us try."

After much discussion, the Dragon King agreed.

"But you must take the Rainbow Bridge to get there quickly, and you must be back before sunset, or the storms will destroy our kingdom."

Ryu and Kenji flew on the Rainbow Bridge, which was made of solid light and moved very fast across the sky.

The Shadow Valley was a dark, scary place where no light seemed to shine.

Twisted trees grew everywhere, and the air was cold and frightening.

"I can barely see anything," Ryu whispered.

"My dragon sight does not work well here."

"But I can see fine," Kenji said, surprised.

"Human eyes must work differently in this darkness. I can guide you."

Together, they crept through the Shadow Valley.

Kenji led the way because he could see in the darkness, while Ryu followed and protected him with his fire breath.

Finally, they found the cave where the dark spirits lived.

The spirits were surprised to see a human and a dragon working together.

"Impossible!" they screeched.

"Humans and dragons are enemies! They cannot cooperate!"

"You are wrong," Kenji said bravely.

"Ryu is my best friend. We trust each other completely."

The dark spirits attacked, but Kenji and Ryu worked perfectly as a team.

When the spirits tried to confuse Ryu with darkness, Kenji guided him.

When the spirits tried to hurt Kenji, Ryu protected him with fire and claws.

Together, they were much stronger than either could be alone.

Finally, they reached the Heart of Sky.

It was imprisoned in a cage of shadow magic that burned Ryu when he touched it.

But the cage did not hurt Kenji at all.

"Human hands can touch shadow magic safely!" Kenji realized.

He quickly grabbed the Heart of Sky and freed it from the cage.

The moment Kenji touched the Heart, it began to glow with warm, beautiful light.

The dark spirits screamed and ran away, because they could not stand the light.

"We did it!" Ryu cheered.

"We saved the kingdom!"

They flew back to the Dragon Kingdom just as the sun was setting.

All the dragons cheered when they saw the Heart of Sky safely returned.

The terrible storms stopped immediately, and peace came back to the floating islands.

"You have both shown great courage," the Dragon King said proudly.

"And you have proven that dragons and humans can be the best of friends when they trust each other."

The old red dragon Akira bowed to Kenji.

"Human boy, I was wrong about your people. You have shown honor and bravery. I ask for your forgiveness."

Kenji bowed back politely.

"There is nothing to forgive. I hope that someday, more humans and dragons can be friends like Ryu and me."

But now Kenji's three days were ending.

The dragon protection magic was beginning to fade, and he could feel that he needed to return to his own world.

"I have to go home," he said sadly to Ryu.

"My parents will be worried, and I have school tomorrow."

Ryu looked very sad.

"I wish you could stay forever. But I understand. You have your own life to live, just like I have my duties here."

The Dragon Queen came forward with a beautiful gift.

It was a small pendant made of dragon scale that glowed with gentle light.

"This will allow you to speak with Ryu across the worlds," she explained.

"And when you really need help, or when you want to visit us again, just hold the pendant and call Ryu's name three times. A portal will open."

"Really?" Kenji asked, hardly able to believe it.

"Really," the Dragon King confirmed.

"You have earned a place in our family, young Kenji. You will always be welcome in the Dragon Kingdom."

Ryu gave Kenji a gentle dragon hug with his wing.

"Promise me you will visit again soon."

"I promise," Kenji said.

"And Ryu? Thank you for being the best pet and the best friend anyone could ever have."

"Thank you for saving me when I was small and helpless," Ryu replied.

"I will never forget your kindness."

The portal opened again, and Kenji stepped through.

He found himself back in his bedroom, and everything looked exactly the same as when he had left.

But when he looked at his clock, he discovered that no time had passed at all in his world.

It was still Saturday morning.

Kenji touched the dragon scale pendant around his neck and smiled.

His greatest adventure was over, but it was also just beginning.

He had a best friend who was a Dragon Prince, and he could visit the most magical kingdom in any world whenever he wanted.

From that day on, Kenji was different.

He was more confident, more brave, and more kind to everyone he met.

His teachers noticed that he was a better student, and his parents were proud of how mature he had become.

Sometimes, late at night, Kenji would hold his pendant and whisper to Ryu about his day.

And sometimes, very quietly, he would hear Ryu's voice whispering back about life in the Dragon Kingdom.

During school holidays, Kenji would use the pendant to visit Ryu.

They had many more adventures together, exploring different parts of the Dragon Kingdom and helping solve problems with human and dragon wisdom combined.

And sometimes, when Kenji met other lonely kids at school who loved animals but could not have pets, he would tell them stories about friendship and kindness.

He never told them about Ryu directly, but he helped them understand that the most important thing about having a pet - or any friend - was to love them and take care of them.

Years passed, and Kenji grew up to become a veterinarian who took special care of unusual animals that other doctors could not help.

People said he had a magical way with animals, but Kenji knew that it was just the kindness and understanding he had learned from his friendship with a Dragon Prince.

And in the Dragon Kingdom, Prince Ryuuji grew up to become a wise and fair Dragon King who taught his people that humans could be trusted friends.

Under his rule, dragons and humans began to work together secretly to protect nature and magical creatures in both worlds.

The friendship between a boy and a dragon had changed both of their worlds for the better.

Late at night, when Kenji was an old man, he would still sometimes hold his pendant and talk to his old friend Ryu, now the Dragon King.

And Ryu would tell him about the peaceful kingdom where dragons and humans worked together, and how it all started with one small act of kindness on a rainy day.

The dragon scale pendant still glowed softly in the darkness, a reminder that true friendship can bridge any world, and that kindness is the most powerful magic of all.
