The Last Santa

The television had been on for hours, its light flickering across the dark living room, but Kenji Yamamoto had not been watching it.

He was eighty-two years old, and his evenings had taken on a particular rhythm: dinner alone at the small kitchen table, a cup of barley tea, then the slow migration to the armchair where he would sit with a book until his eyes grew heavy.

The book would fall to his chest. The television would murmur. Eventually, he would wake with a stiff neck and shuffle to bed.

He had lived this way for eleven years, since his wife Fumiko had died in the November that followed his retirement.

People said these things happened together sometimes — that the body, once released from obligation, could not find a new reason to continue.

He did not think this was true of Fumiko, who had been practical and unsentimental in the best possible way.

But he understood the theory. He had felt something similar himself in those first months: a loosening, as though the bolts that held him to the world had been turned one full revolution to the left.

He was half-asleep when the word on the television reached him.

Santa.

It was spoken by a young woman reporter standing in front of a gallery building in the Kitahorie district of Osaka. The building was modern, all glass and steel, and a banner across the entrance read: YOKO MORI — ONE DECEMBER MORNING.

Kenji straightened in his chair.

The report was brief. A painter named Yoko Mori, now fifty-one years old and internationally recognized for her large-format figurative work, had opened a solo exhibition in Osaka — her first in her home city in over a decade.

The exhibition was unusual. Every painting depicted a single memory from her childhood: a visit to a department store with her grandmother, one December morning in 1978, where she had met a department store Santa Claus who had, according to the artist, changed the course of her life.

She was now, the reporter said with a note of wry warmth, hoping to find him.

The segment lasted perhaps ninety seconds. Then the program moved on to a story about road construction in Namba.

Kenji sat very still.

He had worked as a department store Santa at the Daimaru on Midosuji Avenue for twenty-two years.

He had started in 1968, the year after his son was born, because the extra holiday pay helped with the mortgage payments, and because his manager had noticed that Kenji had a particular quality with customers — a patience, a genuine interest in what they said — that made him well-suited for the role.

He had continued long after the financial necessity had passed, because he discovered, to his own surprise, that the work mattered to him in a way he could not easily explain.

He had stopped in 1990, when his knees began to trouble him and the suit had grown uncomfortable. He had been sixty-two. That was thirty years ago.

1978 would have been his tenth year.

He picked up his tea, found it cold, and set it down again. Outside, a December rain had begun to fall against the window.

The next morning, Kenji did the arithmetic over breakfast.

If Yoko Mori was fifty-one now, she had been born in 1974 or 1975. In December of 1978, she would have been three or four years old — very young, but not implausibly young for a visit to a department store Santa.

He had received children as young as two, held on laps by anxious parents, too small to form requests but old enough to be awed or terrified by the red suit and white beard.

More likely, given that she described a substantive interaction — one that had apparently changed the course of her life — she had been closer to four or five. Which would place her birth in 1973 or 1974. Which made her fifty-two or fifty-three now, not fifty-one.

But the television might have rounded, or he might have misheard.

He was aware that this arithmetic was somewhat beside the point.

The Daimaru on Midosuji had not been the only department store in Osaka to employ a Santa in 1978. There was the Takashimaya, the Hankyu, the Kintetsu, the Sogo. All of them would have had their own Santas, their own papier-mâché grottos, their own queues of children in winter coats.

The probability that Yoko Mori's particular Santa had been Kenji Yamamoto was, statistically speaking, quite low.

And yet.

He rose from the table and went to the second bedroom, which he used as a storage room. Along one wall stood a row of cardboard boxes, each labeled in Fumiko's careful handwriting. She had been a great organizer of things.

He found the boxes marked KENJI WORK and opened them one by one until he found what he was looking for: a photograph, taken by a department store photographer in 1978, of Kenji in the Santa suit.

He had been forty-eight years old. The photograph showed him seated in the grotto chair, a child of about six on his knee, both of them looking at the camera.

The child was a boy he did not remember. But himself — himself he recognized completely.

Even through the beard and the hat and the theatrical thickness of the costume padding, he could see his own posture, the slight forward lean that Fumiko had always called his listening pose.

He sat that way whenever someone was talking to him about something that genuinely interested him. He had not been aware of doing it until she pointed it out.

He looked at this for a long time.

Then he went to find the exhibition's website on his tablet computer, which his son had bought him two years ago and which he had slowly learned to use with a degree of competence that still surprised him.

He found the gallery. He found the exhibition dates. He found a gallery of six small preview images: six paintings, all large-format, all in muted winter tones of grey and red and cream.

One of them showed the interior of what was unmistakably a Daimaru department store. He could tell by the particular configuration of the columns and the ceiling lights, by the marble floor pattern he had walked across ten thousand times.

He closed the tablet and sat very still for the second time in two days.

He did not go to the exhibition immediately. Instead, he went to the Osaka City Library on Nakatsu, where he had held a card since 1971.

The library held archives of the Osaka Mainichi newspaper going back to before the war, and Kenji spent a long afternoon in the reference room, turning through the microfilm for December 1978.

He was not entirely sure what he was looking for — some confirmation, perhaps, that he had been the Santa at the Daimaru that year, as though he needed external evidence for a fact he already knew to be true.

He had worked at the Daimaru every December from 1968 to 1990 without a single year's interruption. This was not a thing he was likely to be wrong about.

What he found, on the fifteenth of December 1978, was a small human-interest story in the city pages. It was accompanied by a photograph.

The headline read: MIDOSUJI'S MOST PATIENT SANTA. The story described how a department store Santa at the Daimaru on Midosuji Avenue had been noted by management for his unusual practice of spending extended time with individual children, often five or ten minutes per child, rather than the standard two or three minutes allotted by the scheduling team.

Several parents had written to the store to comment on the experience — a Santa who truly listened, who asked follow-up questions, who seemed genuinely interested in each child as a specific person rather than as a unit in a queue.

The photograph showed Kenji seated in the grotto, leaning forward slightly, talking to a child whose back was to the camera.

He remembered this article. He remembered the manager calling him into the office and showing it to him, half-proud and half-concerned that the extended sessions were creating bottlenecks in the queue.

They had reached a compromise: Kenji would try to limit himself to five minutes per child, except in cases where he judged a longer conversation to be genuinely necessary.

The manager had not defined what such cases might look like. He had trusted Kenji's judgment, which Kenji had always appreciated.

He photographed the article with his phone — a capability that still struck him as faintly miraculous — and left the library.

The December air outside was sharp and clean, the kind that arrived in Osaka only a few weeks a year, when the wind came off the mountains to the east.

He walked slowly toward the subway station, his cane tapping against the pavement, and tried to remember December 1978 specifically: the children, the faces, the conversations.

He could not. There had been so many. Hundreds per season, thousands over the years. The individual faces dissolved into a general impression: expectation, nervousness, occasionally fear, and most often, once the initial strangeness of the situation faded, a cautious opening toward trust.

Children would tell him things they had not told their parents. Children who asked for impossible things — a grandmother to come back, a father to stop being angry, a baby sibling to be healthy — and who he had to answer with a care that he had spent years learning.

He wore his good wool coat, the charcoal one that Fumiko had liked, and his better shoes, which gave him some difficulty on uneven pavement but which seemed appropriate for the occasion, though he could not have said why formality felt necessary here.

The gallery was quieter than he had expected. A young woman at the reception desk gave him a program and pointed him toward the main hall. There were perhaps twenty other visitors, moving at the slow, slightly self-conscious pace of gallery-goers who are trying to prove they are taking things seriously.

The paintings were enormous.

The first one he encountered showed the exterior of the Daimaru building as seen from the street, on a grey winter morning.

The perspective was a child's perspective — the building loomed, its windows shining, the Christmas lights along the facade rendered in a way that was simultaneously precise and impressionistic, as though the memory preserved not the literal lights but the feeling of the lights: the warmth of them, the promise.

At the lower edge of the painting, two small figures: a child in a red coat and a white-haired woman, seen from behind, standing before the great glass doors.

He stood in front of this painting for a long time.

The child in the red coat appeared in every painting that followed. Always small, always from behind or in partial profile, always in motion or in the act of looking at something larger than herself.

In the second painting, she was on the escalator, looking down at the floors below with her mouth open. In the third, she was in the queue before the grotto, surrounded by other children and adults, but somehow solitary — not lonely, exactly, but separate, inside a private experience.

In the fourth painting, she was sitting on Santa's knee.

He stopped.

The Santa in this painting was large and somewhat blurred, as a figure seen in childhood memory might be — impressionistic around the edges, the red of the suit almost theatrical in its intensity.

The beard was very white. The hat was tilted slightly. But the posture was unmistakable: leaning forward, chin inclined toward the child, the whole body organized around the act of listening.

He knew that posture. He had seen it in the 1978 photograph, and in photographs taken at other times, and in the reflection of shop windows when he hadn't known he was being observed.

Fumiko had pointed it out in their wedding photographs, in which he was leaning slightly toward her during the ceremony, arrested in the middle of a careful attention.

That was how he listened. That was how he had always listened.

He read the small card beside the painting. It said: HIM (oil on canvas, 200 x 280 cm, 2024). The price was given as available on request, which in gallery language generally meant very expensive indeed.

He moved on to the next painting and the one after that, following the sequence of the memory: the conversation, the gift, the departure.

By the final room, his legs were tired and he sat down on the bench provided for this purpose in the center of the space.

The last painting was the largest.

It showed Santa's face — or the portion of it visible above the beard and below the hat. Just the eyes. They were dark and specific, crinkled at the corners, looking directly at the child who stood before them.

They were the eyes of someone who, in that moment, had made the child the only thing in the world.

He sat on the bench for a very long time.

A young man who worked at the gallery — tall, wearing glasses with thin frames, carrying a clipboard — approached him with a practiced expression of concern.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

"Yes," Kenji said. "I'm sorry. I've been sitting too long. Old knees."

The young man nodded sympathetically and made a small gesture toward the exit, presumably indicating the location of chairs more conveniently placed for arthritic visitors. But he did not leave immediately, which Kenji took as an invitation.

"The artist," Kenji said. "Yoko Mori. Is she here today?"

"She's here most Thursdays," the young man said. "But she's in a meeting at the moment. Are you — did you have a particular reason for asking?"

Kenji considered how to answer this.

"I worked at the Daimaru department store," he said. "On Midosuji. For many years. As a Santa Claus."

The young man's expression changed. He looked at Kenji with a new attention.

"For how long?"

"Twenty-two years. I stopped in 1990."

"And 1978 would have been—"

"My tenth year, yes."

The young man said nothing for a moment. Then: "There have been other people. Who came to us thinking they might be the one. One man was quite certain — he had worked at the Takashimaya — but the architectural details in the paintings ruled it out. He was very gracious about it."

He paused. "Ms. Mori has been — it's an emotional subject for her. We've been careful about who we allow to approach her directly."

Kenji nodded. This seemed reasonable.

"What happened?" he said. "In 1978. What did he say to her? The Santa."

The young man glanced at his clipboard. "It's in the catalog, actually. She's written about it quite openly." He went to a small table near the wall and returned with a thick, beautifully printed exhibition catalog. He opened it to a page near the center and handed it to Kenji.

The text was in Yoko Mori's own words, in a style that was direct and unornamented. She described arriving at the department store with her grandmother on a December morning in 1978.

Her parents were in the process of separating, though she had not fully understood this at the time. She had understood only that the adults around her were unhappy in a way that seemed to originate from her own existence, and that Christmas was coming without the feeling Christmas was supposed to have.

In the queue for Santa, she had begun to cry. Not loudly — she had been a quiet child — but steadily, in the way of a child who has been crying intermittently for weeks and for whom tears require no particular trigger.

Santa had noticed. When she reached the front of the queue, he had not rushed through the standard questions about presents and good behavior. He had asked, instead, what was wrong.

She had told him that she didn't know how to make her parents happy. He had listened to this for a long time. Then he had said — and these were his words, preserved with the specificity of a memory that has been turned over and examined for forty-five years:

"It's not your job to make them happy. That's their job. Your job is to be exactly who you are."

He had given her a small toy rabbit. She had kept it until she was thirty-two, when it finally fell apart in her hands.

Kenji read this passage twice. Then he closed the catalog carefully and held it on his lap.

He could not remember saying those words. But he could remember thinking them, many times, about many different children.

It was something he had come to believe, through years of sitting in that chair and listening: that children absorbed the emotional weather of their households as though they were responsible for it, and that one of the most useful things an adult could do was to clearly, simply, explicitly reassign that responsibility.

He could not remember her face. But he could remember, with a clarity that surprised him, the feeling of saying those words to a small child and meaning them completely.

He returned home on the subway, standing the whole way because the seats were occupied and he did not feel like asking a younger person to give up theirs.

The car was full of the early-evening crowd: office workers, students, a woman with a stroller, two boys in high school uniforms playing a game on their phones.

The ordinary dense life of the city, indifferent to him, which he found comforting rather than lonely.

He thought about the words.

It's not your job to make them happy. That's their job. Your job is to be exactly who you are.

He had said this, or things very much like it, dozens of times over twenty-two years. He was certain of that. To children whose parents were divorcing, to children whose families were grieving, to children who carried the specific, terrible weight of feeling that they were the cause of adult suffering.

He had developed a small repertoire of such observations, refined over years of practice, the way a craftsman refines a technique.

But had he said it to Yoko Mori specifically? Had she been a real child in front of him, with real tears, in a real December morning in 1978?

The honest answer was that he did not know.

He had a memory of the morning the newspaper story ran — the manager's office, the compromise about timing — but he had no memory of any particular child from that season.

He had a general memory of quiet children and crying children and children who demanded elaborate gifts and children who asked for things that broke his heart.

He had a memory of a small girl with dark hair who had cried without making any noise, at some point during his years at the Daimaru, and he had spoken to her for a long time.

But he could not locate this memory precisely in time, and he could not be certain it was not a composite — a memory assembled from several similar encounters, bound together by their emotional resemblance into something that felt like a single event but might not be.

Memory was not testimony. He knew this. He had known it since Fumiko began forgetting things in her last years, and he had watched the unnerving way in which her confident memories diverged from verifiable facts: conversations that had never happened, events rearranged in time, the steady erosion of the past into something softer and less accountable.

He had thought, then: I must not do this. I must not let my memories become stories I tell myself.

And yet here he was, on a subway car on a December evening, feeling with profound conviction that he had been the Santa who said those words to that child. Feeling it not as a wish but as a simple recognition, the way you recognize your own handwriting in an old letter.

The question was what to do with this conviction.

He got off at his stop and walked the seven minutes home through the cold, the cane steady on the pavement, the city lights beginning to appear in the early dark of December.

He thought about Yoko Mori, fifty-one or perhaps fifty-two years old, standing in front of her enormous paintings, looking for a man who might be him or might not be, who might remember her or might not, who existed for her as a story — the most important story, apparently, of her life — and who might, if he presented himself, become something far more complicated: a real person with a real and fallible memory, capable of disappointment in ways that the story was not.

For two days, he did nothing. He cooked, he read, he watched the television without really watching it. His son called on Saturday evening and they talked for twenty minutes about the grandchildren and the son's work and a trip the family was planning to Okinawa in the spring. Kenji did not mention the exhibition.

On Sunday morning he decided he would not go back.

The decision had a kind of logic he could articulate to himself. What would be gained? He could not tell Yoko Mori with certainty that he was the Santa she was looking for.

He could tell her only that he might be, that the details aligned, that the words she remembered were the words he believed he had said. And even if she accepted this — even if she wanted to accept it — what would she receive?

An old man with bad knees and a tablet computer he was still learning to use, who lived alone in an apartment on the east side of the city and spent his evenings in an armchair. A man whose memory, like all human memory, was selective and self-serving and subject to the distortions of desire.

What she had now was better. What she had now was a Santa who had seen her clearly at a moment when no one else had, who had said the right thing with complete conviction, who existed in her paintings as a presence rather than a person — warm, slightly mythic, composed entirely of the impression he had made.

To replace this with a real, specific man of eighty-two was not obviously an improvement.

He thought about this for most of the day.

In the evening, sitting in the armchair with the book unopened in his lap, he thought about a different question. Not what Yoko Mori would gain, but what he owed to the truth of the encounter itself — to whatever had actually happened in that grotto in December 1978. If it had happened. If he had been the one.

He had spent twenty-two Decembers doing what he believed was genuinely important work. Not because of the salary — the salary had been modest — but because he had come to understand, with increasing conviction over those years, that the grotto was a place where something real could happen.

Where a child could speak to a stranger with an openness they could not manage with the people who loved them and whom they were therefore trying to protect. Where the costume, paradoxically, created a kind of honesty: because Santa was not quite a real person, children could be real with him in ways they could not otherwise afford.

If he had sat in that chair for twenty-two years in the belief that this work mattered — if he had shaped his behavior around that belief, had refined and practiced and committed to it — then the encounter with Yoko Mori was either evidence that he had been right, or it was nothing.

And to quietly decide, now, that the encounter was best left undisturbed in its mythic form was to say, in some final accounting, that the work had been less real than the myth. That the real man was less valuable than the story.

He was not sure he believed that. He was not sure Fumiko would have believed it either. Fumiko had not been patient with comfortable self-deceptions, even affectionate ones.

He sat with this for a long time. Then he went to find a notebook and a pen.

He had always found it easier to think on paper. He had done this his entire adult life: filled notebooks with thoughts that were too provisional to speak aloud, too important to leave unexamined.

Fumiko had teased him about it — the notebooks, the careful handwriting, the way he would sometimes reach for the notepad on the kitchen counter in the middle of dinner to write something down before it escaped him.

"You treat your own mind as though it can't be trusted," she had said once, not unkindly.

"It can't," he had told her. "Nobody's can."

He wrote the letter in a single draft, which surprised him. He had expected to struggle, to revise, to spend hours finding the right tone. Instead the words arrived almost as quickly as he could write them down, as though they had been waiting.

He wrote to Yoko Mori as one of the Santas who had worked at the Daimaru on Midosuji during the 1970s and 1980s.

He did not claim to be her Santa with certainty, because certainty was not something he could honestly offer. What he could say was that he had seen the paintings, and that something in them had recognized itself in him — in the posture, in the implied quality of attention, in the words she had described and which were words he had said, in some form, to many children over many years.

He wrote about what the work had meant to him: not the costume or the grotto or the cheerful performance of magic, but the specific practice of sitting across from a child who had brought their real life to an unusual encounter and choosing to take that life seriously.

He wrote that this had seemed to him the most important thing he could do in that chair — not to give children what they expected from Santa, but to give them what they actually needed, which was often simply to be heard by an adult who had no stake in their emotional management.

He wrote that he did not know whether she remembered him specifically or had absorbed elements of several encounters into a single memory, which was how memory often worked and which did not make the memory less true.

He wrote that whatever had happened between them, she had kept it with extraordinary care, and had made from it something beautiful that he had walked through with a feeling he could not quite name — something between gratitude and recognition and a slight, pleasant vertigo, like looking in a mirror and finding the reflection more faithful than expected.

He wrote that his wife had always said he had a particular expression when he was truly listening to someone, and that he had seen this expression in the painting of Santa's eyes, and that this was when he became fairly certain.

He signed the letter: Kenji Yamamoto, former Santa Claus, Daimaru Midosuji, 1968-1990.

He wrote his phone number at the bottom, and then his email address, which his son had set up for him two years ago and which he checked with moderate reliability.

He read the letter through once.

Then he folded it into an envelope, wrote the gallery's address on the front, and walked to the post box at the end of the street in the cold December evening, and slipped it in before he could change his mind.

The call came on the morning of December twenty-second, from a number he did not recognize.

The voice was a woman's, middle-aged, careful. She said her name was Yoko Mori and that she was calling because she had received his letter. There was a pause, and in the pause he heard that she was managing something considerable.

"I read it several times," she said.

"I'm sorry if it caused distress," he said.

"No. It was — no." Another pause. "May I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Do you remember the rabbit?"

He thought. He thought as carefully and honestly as he was able, which was all he could do. The toy rabbit he had given her — the one she had kept for thirty years before it fell apart. He had given toy rabbits many times. He had given dozens of things.

What he remembered were not specific gifts but a general disposition of generosity, an understanding that what was given mattered less than how it was given, the quality of attention behind the act.

"I remember giving many toy rabbits," he said. "I can't remember yours specifically. I want to be honest with you about that."

"That's all right," she said, and her voice when she said it told him that she had expected this, that she had probably prepared herself for it. "I don't need you to remember me. That's not — that's not what I was looking for."

"What were you looking for?"

She was quiet for a moment. "I think I was looking for proof that it had actually happened. That it was a real thing and not something I had made up, or inflated past the point of truth. You know how you can carry a memory for so long that you start to wonder if it's really yours."

He knew this very well.

"It happened," he said. "I can't give you certainty about every detail. But those words — it's not your job to make them happy — those are words I believed and repeated. Many times, over many years. So whatever I gave you, I meant it. I wasn't performing. I meant every word."

He heard her exhale, slowly, like someone who has been holding their breath for a considerable time.

"Would you come to the gallery?" she said. "Before the exhibition closes? I'd like to — I don't need it to be a big thing. I just think I'd like to see you."

He looked out the window at the December morning. The light was pale and clean, the kind of light that arrived only at this time of year, when the angle of the sun was low and every surface caught it differently.

"Yes," he said. "I'd like that."

He went on the twenty-third, a Wednesday. The gallery was quiet again. She was waiting near the entrance — a woman of middle height, with dark hair beginning to grey at the temples, wearing a paint-stained jacket that she had apparently forgotten to change before leaving her studio.

She looked at him with a directness that reminded him of no particular child he could remember, but of childhood in general — of the particular quality of attention that children had before they learned to be guarded.

They shook hands. Then she looked at him for a long moment, taking in his face with the deliberate patience of someone who paints.

"Your eyes," she said finally.

"Yes," he said.

"I got them right."

"You did."

They stood in the last room together, in front of the final painting — the one that showed only the eyes. He looked at it for a long time. It was strange, to see yourself rendered in another person's memory: not flattering or unflattering, but true in the particular way of things observed by someone paying very close attention.

He thought about twenty-two Decembers. About the hundreds of children who had sat before him and told him things in the frank belief that he was capable of receiving what they gave. About how little he had known, in the moment, about what any of it would come to mean.

"Thank you," he said, to the painting as much as to her.

She stood beside him, looking at the same painting, at the same set of eyes.

"Thank you," she said.

Outside, when he finally left, the December light was still pale and perfect, lying across the city with its usual indifference and its usual, inexhaustible generosity.

He walked to the subway station, slowly, with his cane.

He felt, for the first time in years, as though everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
